Puppy & Kitten Care

Give your new pet the best start in life.

Your Puppy or Kitten’s First Year of Veterinary Care

The first year of your puppy or kitten’s life is critical for their development, and each pet requires an individualized care plan to ensure they get the best possible start. Together, we can create a comprehensive plan that meets your new pet’s unique needs and sets them up for a long, healthy life.

What Should My Pet’s First Year Look Like?

During their first year, your puppy or kitten will need regular visits to the veterinarian. These visits typically include physical exams, vaccinations, and diagnostic testing—all of which are essential for monitoring your pet’s health as they grow and develop.

Physical Exams

A strong foundation of wellness begins with your pet’s first physical exam. Unlike adult pets, puppies and kittens require approximately 3-4 exams during their first 8-16 weeks. During these exams, your pet will receive important vaccinations and a comprehensive assessment of their overall health.

Vaccines

Since their immune systems are still developing, puppies and kittens need a series of properly timed vaccinations and boosters. We customize vaccine recommendations based on your pet’s breed and lifestyle, following the guidelines provided by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA).

Diagnostic Testing

Both puppies and kittens should undergo specific diagnostic tests during their first year to ensure they remain healthy. Puppies should be tested for heartworm by 12 months of age, if not earlier. Kittens should be tested for feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) during their first exam.

Along with these essential procedures, your veterinarian will also discuss other services that can help improve your pet’s long-term health, such as spaying or neutering. Our goal is to ensure your new furry friend stays happy, healthy, and well cared for as they grow.
